An Exile's Letters to Who Knows Where 1998
video monitors facing upward support three broken bottles with mirror-like foil inside them. Based on the idea of the letter in the bottle, the viewer is able to see on the foil-letters text & ocean. Similiar to 17th & 18th century Dutch painting, the viewer is encouraged to look at the work from a particular perspective thus making the image take on a 3D form.
In this case the mirror letters within the bottles reflect the surrounding text and ocean video, thus creating a form of video letter. The text has been taken from letters written at the end of the 18th Century by convicts during their voyage to Australia.
